Frequently asked questions

What The Stoic Mother is, and what it is not.

A storytelling and ideas publication about motherhood, character, responsibility, resilience, independence and letting go.

What is a Stoic Mother?

A Stoic Mother is the site's name for a mother whose life reflects qualities such as courage, responsibility, judgment, resilience, boundaries, acceptance of reality and the ability to love without trying to control every outcome.

Does Stoic mean emotionless?

No. That is one of the most common misunderstandings of Stoicism. The Stoic Mother is interested in disciplined engagement with reality, not emotional numbness. A mother can love fiercely, grieve deeply, worry, get angry, laugh, break down and still respond to life with courage and judgment.

Do featured mothers have to study Stoic philosophy?

No. The phrase is an interpretive archetype, not a doctrinal membership test. Many women live out ideas associated with Stoicism without ever using the label or reading an ancient Stoic text.

Is this a parenting advice site?

Not primarily. The Stoic Mother is more interested in lived experience, reflection and the meaning underneath the experience than in offering formulaic parenting tips. The site may discuss choices, boundaries and consequences, but its core purpose is storytelling and philosophy.

Why was The Stoic Mother founded by a man?

Because Eric Steele is a son who was raised by a mother whose lessons became clearer to him with age. He created the publication from that point of entry, not from a claim to speak for every mother. The long-term editorial vision includes mothers, daughters, sons, grandmothers and other contributors with their own lived experience.

Who was Eric Steele's mother?

Eric's mother was Virginia Katherine Steele (1939-2022), a Kansas mother of five whose life helped inspire this publication. She served as a La Leche League Leader for more than 50 years, designed the E-Z Baby Tote infant carrier, and worked alongside her husband Jack at Mail Marketing Plus beginning in 1977. The Stoic Mother grows in part from the lessons Eric recognized more clearly as he grew older, especially her ability to remain deeply involved while ultimately allowing her adult children to own their own lives.

Is this a political or ideological publication?

The Stoic Mother is not built around a political party or a required ideological label. It has an affirmative worldview: motherhood has dignity, personal responsibility matters, love and control are not the same thing, boundaries matter, independence matters, and strength does not require performance. Individual essays may challenge cultural assumptions when the subject calls for it.

Will every story be flattering?

No. This is not a saint-making project. Honest stories may include conflict, mistakes, regret, overprotection, anger, difficult relationships and lessons that took decades to understand. Respect does not require pretending a human being was perfect.

Can I submit a story?

That is the plan. A future submission portal will accept personal stories, nominations, essays, story ideas and editorial leads. Self-submissions and stories about another person may both be considered. Submission will not guarantee publication, endorsement or editorial acceptance.

What kinds of stories are you looking for?

Stories about boundaries, grief, sacrifice, independence, consequences, resilience, caregiving, aging, identity, adult children, letting go, failure, reinvention, humor, family history and the lessons people understood only later.

Who owns The Stoic Mother?
